Sunset in Costa Rica

Now you might be asking well, "Where did you go?"

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Playa Grande, a neighboring town to the popular destination spot Tamarindo, and it did not disappoint.

Costa Rica is a destination that should be on everyone's travel bucket list. The beaches were pristine, the water crystal clear, and the scenery breathtaking. I highly recommend checking out Playa Grande for your next tropical getaway. The town offers a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere compared to Tamarindo, making it the perfect spot for those looking to escape the crowds. Whether you're a surfer, sunbather, or nature lover, there's something for everyone at Playa Grande.

Hostel Hotel in Costa Rica
Onda Playa Grande

I stayed at a hotel/hostel combination at Onda -- which I can only highly recommend for travelers visiting Costa Rica. It's the perfect stay for solo travelers, groups of friends, and families! The workers there are nothing but helpful and joy-filled individuals who want you to have the experience you desire.

Playa Grande was a beautiful spot for relaxation, and with a few car rides (or motorbikes), it was the perfect middle spot for fun adventures. About an hour car ride, and you could hike a beautiful trail leading to a waterfall that the employees at Onda can help you plan. Then it is about a twenty-minute car ride from Tamarindo, which is a more typical traveler destination-- so it is popping with people and bars!

But no matter the destination - tips are always helpful!

Here are my five tips for solo travel:

1. Research and Plan Ahead:

Before embarking on your solo travel adventure, make sure to thoroughly research your destination. Familiarize yourself with local customs, traditions, safety precautions, and must-see attractions. Planning ahead will give you a sense of security and confidence, making your trip more enjoyable.

Honestly, TikTok was my tool for researching where to go and what to expect.

If you are going to a country where you don't know the language, learn some basics from Babble or Duolingo! It's important to know the basics, but you don't need to be an expert. Most people are flexible and want to help you!

2. Pack Light, Pack Right:

When traveling alone, it's essential to travel light. Opt for a versatile wardrobe that can be mixed and matched and pack only the essentials. Remember, you'll be the one carrying your luggage, so pack smart to avoid unnecessary strain and stress.

For my journey, I used two backpacks. One mainly for most of my camera equipment, and then I also bought the travel backpack from Amazon and packing cubes which allowed me to walk freely with little to no stress of lugging around big bags.

It also helps to Facetime your friends while packing light for motivation and reassurance that you can do it!

3. Stay Connected:

While solo travel is all about embracing solitude, it's crucial to stay connected with loved ones and maintain your safety. Share your itinerary with trusted friends or family members and check in regularly. My closest friends and mom texted me every single morning!

I also used Find My Friends to share my location and confirmed people would check on me.

Additionally, consider investing in a reliable travel SIM card or portable Wi-Fi device to stay connected during your adventures. This is only necessary if you are going to a destination where you will have limited access to wifi or service.

4. Trust Your Instincts:

One of the most valuable skills to develop as a solo traveler is trusting your instincts. Always listen to your gut feeling and assess your surroundings. If something feels off or unsafe, remove yourself from the situation. Your intuition is your best guide.

I never felt unsafe in Costa Rica, but there have been many moments (especially as a woman) where I knew not to trust a situation. This is something that should always be practiced in everyday life.

5. Embrace Solo Activities:

Being alone doesn't mean being lonely. Embrace solo activities and take advantage of the freedom to indulge in your passions. Whether it's exploring local markets, hiking breathtaking trails, or immersing yourself in the local culture, solo travel allows a freedom that is usually hard to achieve while

I will admit I am almost too good at being independent and doing things on my own, so I wasn't afraid of the loneliness aspect of solo traveling, but I had numerous moments wishing I had loved ones with me. It takes courage to go somewhere alone and embark on journies that you usually will have company with.

Nonetheless, embarking on a solo travel adventure opens up a world of self-discovery and meaningful connections. As you venture into the unknown, whether it's exploring a vibrant city or venturing into the wilderness, you'll find that solo travel provides a unique opportunity to learn more about yourself and the people you encounter along the way. I made a great deal of new friends that I am nothing but extremely grateful to have met!

If you are considering solo travel, then do it! Stepping outside your comfort zone and embracing the freedom of solo exploration allows you to uncover hidden strengths, gain confidence, and develop a deeper understanding of your own desires, passions, and capabilities.

From chance encounters in bustling markets to engaging conversations in hostel common rooms, you'll cross paths with like-minded individuals who are also on their own personal journeys. These connections can lead to lasting friendships, provide fresh perspectives, and create a sense of camaraderie that enriches your travel experiences.

So, whether you're wandering through historic streets, embarking on thrilling outdoor adventures, or immersing yourself in different cultures, embrace the transformative power of solo travel. Allow yourself to be open to new experiences, connect with diverse individuals, and embrace the unexpected.

Traveling will not only broaden your horizons but will deepen your understanding of yourself and the world around you.
